Daocheng-Yading Airport to open

Sunday, March 13th, 2011

On March 1st of this year, the plan to build an airport at Daocheng-Yading was approved by the State Council of China. The Daocheng-Yading airport will be 50 kilometres north of Daocheng country and 130 kilometres away from Yading Nature Reserve.

The construction of this highland airport will take approximately 3 years. Once completed, it will occupy an area of 15 square kilometres, and will offer flights to and from Chengdu, Chongqing, Xi’an and Guiyang.

Up until recent years, Yading Nature Reserve has managed to retain relative seclusion. Being a full day’s drive from its two nearest airports (Kangding and Diqing airport in Zhongdian) has deterred tourists on a tight schedule. However, once the airport opens in 2013, flight times of only an hour from major cities such as Chengdu, will make Yading Nature Reserve an attractive destination for even a weekend getaway. With the Director of the Daocheng-Yading Airport Construction Project projecting an annual passenger figure of 350,000 for flights to and from Daocheng-Yading, the peace and serenity of this majestic mountain reserve may not last long.
