Dehang Miao Village
Dehang is a gem of a valley tucked between soaring karst peaks to the west of Jishou. It aptly lives up to its name which means "beautiful valley" in Miao. The two main hikes in the area are a steep climb up to “Questioning the Heavens" viewing platform from where you get a birdseye view of the valley below, and a gentle climb through the rice terraces to Liusha Waterfall. For those with more time, there are also several other waterfalls, caves and Miao villages in the area that are worth exploring.
Along each of these hikes you have the chance to learn more about Chinese agriculture, watching the water buffaloes ploughing the fields or the locals tending to their rice crops.
In the morning and afternoon there are free cultural performances in Dehang village, showcasing Miao drum dancing, singing, traditional costuming and wedding customs. After lots of hiking, this gives you the perfect chance to sit back and relax your aching muscles! |
