Lijiang
While most people visit old towns to soak up the history and culture of the place, it seems most Chinese tourists come to Lijiang to party. At night the restaurants and bars along the canals are choc-a-block and outdoor dining is at a premium. The loud singing of lovers courting each other across the canals characterises what is known as "Bar Street", the centre of the action in Lijiang. In the square the Naxi women gather to perform local dances, inviting the tourists to join in. There's a strong festive spirit.
If you're looking for a bit of peace and quiet, heading down shop-less alleyways is your best bet. Or take a ride out into the countryside, enjoying the grassland and mountain scenery enroute to surrounding villages.
