Tiger Leaping Gorge is the most popular trek for independent hikers in China. It is located about 100 kilometers northwest of Lijiang Old Town lying between Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Haba Snow Mountain. It is believed to be the deepest gorge in the world. In the past, people would choose between the easier, flatter 'Low Trail' and the much longer, more strenuous and dangerous 'High Trail'. These days, the 'Low Trail' has been made into a road to allow tour buses to pass through. Therefore, hiking Tiger Leaping Gorge is now synonomous with taking the 'High Trail'. From the top of the gorge you look down the steeply angled (70-90 degrees) cliff sides to the rushing rapids of the Jingsha River more than two hundreds metres below. Needless to say, in periods of heavy rainfall walking the precarious paths along the cliff edges is more than a little scary! This fifteen kilometre trek can be completed in one very long day for the superfit or two more relaxing days for those who want to soak up the scenery. Along the way, there are numerous guesthouses offering basic accommodation and sweeping views of the gorge. If you're coming to Yunnan and like to walk, it's a not to be missed experience. |
